Cafe 1017 Sponsors Programs in Washington, D.C. Metro Area
The popular internet Cafe 1017 is sponsoring two great programs to teach young ladies about cooking and etiquette, etc.
Chef Thomas states, "I am currently working with the Capital Area Food Bank on a volunteer basis teaching a cooking class called Eating Right. The class is held at Ferebee Hope Elementry School in SE Washington, D.C. The participants are from low income families and their children attend the school. The purpose of the program is to encourage families that don't have a lot of money to spend on food to begin eating healthier at home vs eating at mcdonalds etc. We meet weekly for four hours disussing food purchasing, dietary choices, food preparation and a host of other things. Its really a fulfilling feeling as many of the participants take the recipe home and prepare the food we have given them and come back the following week with a different twist on the ingredients and presentation. I have about twenty students in my class and it seems to grow each week!"

Another program Chef Thomas works with is called The Young Ladeis of Tomorrow. "This non profit organization tries to help young women whom may have had legal issues get back on the right track. I perform a similar function with them. For example, we are having an event of which I am catering and the young ladies will help me prepare and serve the food. I teach them about food etiquette, dining etc. I really get enjoyment out watching the young ladies develop their social skills and food knowledge", explains Thomas.
In March 2010, Chef Thomas and many of his fellow chefs from the Nation's Capital Chefs Association, a division of the American Culinary Federation www.acf-ncca.org participated in the National School Breakfast Event at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School in Alexandria. They served 700 children in about 2 hours!!!
